June Walk or Run Challenge

Welcome back!

In honour of the beautiful weather, I put together a little challenge to get us all moving in the sunshine. The June Challenge is a way for us to motivate one another and keep ourselves accountable. Read on for more details about the challenge and how to join!

How it Works

Step 1: Set a distance goal in km or miles that you would like to walk or run by the end of June

Step 2: Email your goal to movesbymeghan@gmail.com

Step 3: An invitation to a shared google doc will be sent, this is where all goals will be shared.

Step 4: Get outside and walk or run.

Step 5: Update how many km or miles you walk each day in the google doc so we can keep one another accountable!

Rules:

Although this challenge is meant to be FUN first and foremost, it is also aimed at helping improve our health, get us out in the fresh air, and reduce sedentary activity. Thus, there are some rules for the challenge.

  1. Only outdoor walking or running counts towards your goal. Special circumstances will permit a treadmill or cycling indoors!
  2. Your daily ‘steps’ do not count towards the goal. It has to be a dedicated time specifically focused on walking or running.
  3. Outdoor sports such as golf count so long as you are walking the course.

WHY it works

Humans are social animals, and we constantly seek out the support and approval of others, especially when it pertains to doing work. The department of Kinesiology at the University of Indiana found that participants who exercise alone have a 43% dropout rate. Those who workout with a partner had a 6.3% dropout rate. The increased adherence to exercise is attributed to various benefits that are gained through working out in a group or with a partner. These benefits include:

  • Support
  • Accountability
  • Motivation
  • Healthy competition
  • Commitment

Considering the current circumstances with COVID, working out in group settings is not necessarily possible for everyone. This challenge is meant to provide all of the benefits gained from group and partner workouts in a socially distanced format!

Are you ready to commit to the June Challenge and join the team? If so, set your goal, send it to movesbymeghan@gmail.com and let’s get moving!
