Hey it’s Meghan, I have a Bachelors degree in Kinesiology, NASM Certified Personal trainer and Certified Nutrition Coach. To start, I wanted to give you a look into my life leading up to this point and the reasons why health and wellness have become such an important part of it.
I don’t want to bore you with the ramblings of what my childhood was like, so i will sum it up as… very active! I played every sport you could imagine (soccer, hockey, baseball, badminton, volleyball, etc etc) and lived a relatively normal life.
Fast forward to Brock University, where I was a student pursuing a Bachelors of Kinesiology. As a 17-year-old off at university and out of my familial home for the first time I felt overwhelmed (as many university students do). Although I still joined soccer teams and hit the gym every so often, my diet and sleep schedule became absolute GARBAGE. I found myself slipping deeper into anxiety and depression. Instead of looking at my behaviours and making lifestyle changes, I was prescribed anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medication (which may work for some, but sadly made my issues worse). This continued for the rest of my university experience until I graduated and moved back to Whitby, ON to start looking for a job!
My first job out of school was working as a bartender. I had bartended throughout University, so it was the quickest job I could get out of school (sadly jobs in your field aren’t always readily available for new grads). After bartending I started working for an IT Professional Services company in Toronto, ON as an Account Manager. The company itself was great, but being an Account Manager meant long hours, taking clients out for drinks, dinners and late nights followed by early mornings in the office (and lots of Starbucks). It is safe to say that at this point in my life I was NOT the epitome of health. Even though I had learned all of the dangers of sedentary lifestyle and a poor diet throughout my bachelors’ degree I was clearly not applying it. There I was, 24, getting overweight and tired… when something horrible happened and made me realize it was time to change!
An immediate family member had a heart attack at a young age, followed by cardiovascular issues that are now a life-long struggle. I always knew this ran in my family, but until it affected someone in my lifetime it didn’t seem real. The sad truth is… I knew better… I had learned extensively about the leading causes of illness plaguing our society (Cardiovascular Disease, Cancer, Diabetes, Chronic Respiratory Illnesses) and even knew how to help prevent some of these diseases. I felt horrible, why didn’t I help them? why didn’t I use my education to teach others and maybe even save the suffering of my family?
Taking a hard look at myself made me realize I was heading towards a similar fate. Hardly working out, eating and drinking excessive amounts, and constantly in a state of anxiety (likely induced by lack of sleep).
That was it for me, I started my workout regime at 3 days per week and slowly increased it, started eating healthy and practicing mindfulness among other things. After a several months of adhering to a variety of lifestyle changes I felt my health turning around. Now, 2.5 years later I am the HEALTHIEST I have ever been (and still improving)!
Here we are in 2021…I quit my job, and I am finally pursuing my passion to help others. Launching Moves by Meghan, gives me the platform to share posts and interviews on a variety of wellness interventions including fitness, nutrition and mindfulness. If you do decide to follow along I hope I can help you overcome whatever issues you might be facing, or simply take your fitness to the next level!
